Have you been told that bakuchiol is "just as effective as retinol" and finally found the holy grail for your sensitive skin? Do you feel a secret hope every time you apply it, wondering if you've finally found the answer? Are you starting to suspect that the "natural retinol" narrative is too good to be true?

Let's address the skincare industry's favorite new narrative. Bakuchiol is everywhere. "Nature's retinol." "Retinol results without the irritation." "The plant-based alternative that actually works." The marketing is seductive, the promises are bold, and you're left wondering if you've finally found the answer to your sensitive skin prayers.

But here's the uncomfortable truth: the claim that bakuchiol is "better than retinol" is based on a single study, and the science says the comparison is far more complicated than the marketing suggests.

The One Study

The famous 12-week, double-blind study that everyone cites showed that 0.5% bakuchiol twice daily produced comparable improvements to 0.5% retinol once daily on wrinkles, pigmentation, elasticity, and firmness. The bakuchiol group experienced less dryness, scaling, and irritation, and notably didn't have photosensitivity.

But here's what the marketing won't tell you: that's one study. As board-certified dermatologist Whitney Bowe, M.D., stated, "There is one study—and it's a good study—that shows if you use bakuchiol once a day and use retinol once a day for three months, you can actually see comparable results between the two groups. But that's only one study."

The Evidence Gap

The evidence for retinol spans decades. Thousands of studies. Millions of patients. The evidence for bakuchiol? A recent systematic review found only 14 clinical studies, with most (57%) being open-label trials without control groups. Only three were randomized controlled trials.

The review concluded that "conclusive clinical research supporting bakuchiol remains in its infancy compared to retinol." The studies also often use bakuchiol in combination with other ingredients, "making the evaluation of its individual effects difficult." The researchers noted "methodological limitations such as the lack of randomization and control groups, along with variations in study designs, prevent definitive conclusions."

What "Comparable" Actually Means

Let's unpack "comparable." The study showed similar results in a specific measure—improvement in wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. But "similar" doesn't mean "identical." Dermatologists note that "retinol is more well-studied than bakuchiol and is significantly more potent, so it tends to show more dramatic effects when it comes to improving skin tone and texture."

If you're chasing deep wrinkles or stubborn pigmentation, retinol remains the ingredient with the evidence. "If it's fast, visible results that you're looking for, vitamin A would be the better option." For stubborn hyperpigmentation, tretinoin (prescription-strength retinol) works at a level that over-the-counter products cannot legally touch.

The "Better" Decision

Bakuchiol isn't "better" than retinol—it's different. It's for a different skin type. One isn't superior to the other; it depends on your skin goals and what your complexion can handle.

If your skin tolerates retinol, use retinol. If you have sensitive skin, are pregnant, or want a gentler option, use bakuchiol. The choice isn't "which is better"—it's "which is right for you."

The 3-Drop System's Honest Approach

The 3-Drop System refuses to participate in the "better than retinol" hype. Our approach acknowledges that bakuchiol is a genuine option for people who can't tolerate retinol, but we don't pretend it's a replacement for everyone. We give you the science, the evidence, and the choice—because the "better than" narrative is designed to sell you a fantasy, not give you real results.
